Andrew Lewis

As Founder of Nonzero Advisory, Andrew Lewis helps organizations to maximize long-term value in their relationships with customers, alliance partners, suppliers and governments.  Building on over 20 years’ experience providing strategic advice to clients on their toughest negotiations, Andrew helps cross-functional teams to get aligned on an optimal negotiation strategy and pressure-test their approach, ensuring that they achieve their objectives and preserve strategic relationships without leaving value on the table.

Andrew works as a sounding board and negotiation coach for teams including commercial, market access, government affairs, legal affairs, and finance to help them consider the full range of strategic options they have; make the right sequencing and process choices in terms of stakeholder engagement; design value-creating deal packages; and consider multiple tactical scenarios prior to sitting at the negotiating table.

As a student of political science, Andrew has long been interested in understanding what lies beneath people’s beliefs, how they engage with and influence others, what makes them reach agreement, and what leads them towards disagreement or conflict.

During his work in organizational change consulting, in which he advised on post-merger integration, and in a leadership development role at Goldman Sachs, Andrew came to understand the importance of effective collaboration as a driver of business success.

This led him to work alongside some of the founding members of the Harvard Negotiation Project (HNP) to learn best practice methodologies and apply them in real-world situations. Through his consulting work, Andrew has advised clients including pharmaceutical market access and sales teams, biotech R&D leaders, wealth management advisers, and energy procurement professionals, helping them get deals done in some of their toughest partnering contexts. Read more about Andrew’s clients.

Andrew advises several global pharmaceutical companies on negotiations with government payers on market access and pricing & reimbursement.  Recent engagements have included the development of negotiation strategies for the global launch of Covid therapies, novel vaccines and gene therapies, and the provision of bespoke coaching support to country teams.

Andrew has in-depth understanding of strategic alliances, and regularly coaches cross-functional alliance teams on how to manage conflict and relaunch strained relationships.  Andrew has also facilitated multiple joint alliance sessions with teams from both alliance partners.

Andrew spent 4 years working on a pro bono basis as a senior advisor to the Foreign Minister of the national unity government of South Sudan during the country’s independence process from 2009-13, spearheading negotiations for the fastest ever post-independence accession of a new member state to the United Nations.  He has provided advice on negotiation strategy to governments and political groups involved in disputes that have been on the agenda of the UN Security Council, including in Somalia and Ethiopia.

Andrew is based in the Netherlands and works globally.  Andrew holds a BA in Politics, Philosophy, and Economics from the University of Oxford, and a Masters in International Law and Diplomacy from The Fletcher School at Tufts University. In addition to English, he speaks French and Spanish.
